French consortium “Referral Center for hereditary heart diseases”

Healthcare provider: The consortium includes six teams from various University hospitals in Paris: Bichat/Henri Mondor/HEGP/Ambroise Paré/Necker/Pitié-Salpêtrière. It is coordinated at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital by Prof. Dr. Philippe Charron. The Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital encompasses the Academic hospital (1800 beds for inpatients, 1700 medical employers), the Medical Faculty of Pierre & Marie Curie University (31.000 students/year), and several INSERM research units (INSERM is a French public organism dedicated to medical research and health). The Institute of Cardiology within Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital includes the Medical Cardiology Department, the Cardiovascular surgery department and the Intensive Care  Department (2600 in-bed hospitalisations/2700 coronary angiograms/ 10 000 echocardiograms / 450 pace-maker implantation/ 2000 cardiac surgeries (including 65 heart transplantations), per year). Since 2011, it is a component of ICAN (Institute of Cardiometabolism And Nutrition) funded by Ministry of Research, which joins together all the research, educational and care activities dedicated to cardiometabolic diseases (14 teams, > 100 researchers).  

Centre for rare and complex heart diseases: The consortium “Referral Center for hereditary heart diseases” (www.cardiogen.aphp.fr) is already labeled as such by the French Ministry of Health in the context of the Rare diseases national Plan. It is organized as a multidisciplinary expert Network in Paris and is coordinated at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (Pr Philippe Charron). It is consisting of 6 Parisian university hospital teams from “Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris” (APHP): Bichat (A. Leenhardt)/Henri Mondor (T. Damy)/HEGP (A. Hagège)/Ambroise Paré (N. Mansencal)/Necker (D. Bonnet)/Pitié-Salpêtrière university (P. Charron) hospitals. The expertise is about 2 main groups of cardiac diseases: Cardiomyopathies and Electrical diseases, both in adults and children. The consortium provides a global and complete care of these diseases through combined multidisciplinary skills and facilities. Genetics expertise is leaded by Pitié-Salpêtrière team, both regarding genetic counseling and molecular genetic diagnosis (National Referral cardiogenetics molecular Lab). The consortium has a strong involvement in university teaching and are co-authors of various high level publications as well as recommendations of care at national or international level.

Prof. Dr. Philippe Charron is a cardiologist and the representative member of the AP-HP Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital in ERN GUARD-HEART. He is leading the Thematic Area “Familial cardiomyopathies in adults and children” of ERN GUARD-HEART.
