Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Prof. Dr. C.C. Iliescu”

Healthcare provider: The Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Prof. Dr. C.C. Iliescu” is the largest tertiary cardiology centre in Romania. The Institute has a high concentration of highly trained professional staff and scientific and a modern technical equipment. It is featuring heart transplantation and other modern techniques and surgery and interventional cardiology. Patients with complex heart diseases are referred to the Institute, where more than 40% of cardiovascular interventions in Romania are performed. Annually, over 700 open-heart surgeries (36% of all interventions made today in Romania). The Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Prof. Dr. C.C. Iliescu” has a teaching centre for future doctors in cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular and interventional cardiology. The activities within the Institute involve also clinical and fundamental research, which are valued at national and international congresses.

Centre for rare and complex heart diseases: The Expert Center for Rare Genetic Cardiovascular Diseases of Bucharest, Romania, was endorsed by the Romanian Ministry of Health  (Letter of endorsement no 657/15.06.2016) and is organized in the largest Romanian tertiary cardiology center – the Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Prof. Dr. C.C. Iliescu”, Bucharest, receiving a large number of patients from the southern and eastern part of Romania (a region encompassing around 7 millions inhabitants) – both as inpatients and as outpatients. The hospital has an interventional cardiology department and an electrophysiology department. The echocardiography laboratory has European accrediation both for conventional echocardiography and special techniques. We also have access to a cardiac MRI facility. The expertise includes cardiac rare genetic diseases, mainly familial cardiomyopathies, and the center is the first in Romania to have developed standardized protocoles for:

  • management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathiy, familial dilated cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy.
  • genetic counselling and diagnosis in inherited cardiovascular diseases
  • family screening of patients with genetic diseases.
  • systemic screening of patients with multisystemic disorders and cardiac involvement (e.g., Fabry cardiomyopathy).
