Malta: Mater Dei Hospital
Mater Dei Hospital is the only, acute general teaching hospital in the Maltese islands offering a full range of hospital services. It also provides an extensive range of specialist services and is run by the National Health Service.
Mater Dei Hospital aims to create a centre of excellence in the provision of effective and efficient, acute patient centered quality care. It also aims to achieve high levels of patient and staff satisfaction and enhance teaching, research and innovation.
Dr Melanie Zammit Burg is a Resident Specialist Cardiologist at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta training in Electrophysiology and Cardiac Devices. She has a special interest in Inherited Cardiac Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death and in 2017 established an Inherited Arrhythmia service to cater for individuals with hereditary arrhythmias, survivors of sudden cardiac death, and families of victims. In 2018 she obtained a Masters degree by research in geno-phenotypic characterisation of Maltese Brugada Syndrome patients. She is European Heart Rhythm Association Young Electrophysiologist Ambassador for Malta, and European Society of Cardiology Cardiologist of Tomorrow National Leader.
Dr. Tiziana Felice is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta and is the clinical lead of the inherited cardiomyopathy clinic. This clinic was established in 2014 were individuals suffering from various inherited cardiomyopathies are reviewed and assessed for their risk of sudden cardiac death. Clinical screening of their first-degree relatives is also performed. She has also helped in setting up a cardiogenetic service at Mater Dei Hospital for cardiomyopathy patients. In 2019 she obtained a Masters degree by research in identifying mutations causing sarcomeric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in the Maltese population.
