Barts Health NHS Trust

Healthcare provider: Barts Health NHS Trust is one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers and the largest trust in the NHS with a  turnover of approximately £1.1 billion and approximately 15,000 employees. The trust is responsible for several  hospitals that offer services that serve the needs of the local community, and are home to some of Britain’s  leading specialist centres including cancer, cardiac, trauma, respiratory, renal and emergency care. Barts Trust is a member of UCL Partners, the largest academic health sciences system in the world, which ensures that our  patients are some of the first in the country to benefit from the latest drugs and treatments.

Centre for rare and complex heart diseases: The St Bartholomew’s Centre for Rare and Inherited Cardiovascular Disease is a specialist service located at The Barts Heart Centre and is one of the largest units dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of inherited cardiac disease in Europe. Led by Professor Perry Elliott, the group has numerous research partnerships with investigators at UCL, Institute of Child Health (Great Ormond Street Hospital), the MRC Neuromuscular Disease Centre (Queen Square) and the Royal Free Hospital, London. Data obtained from the study of patients and relatives is used to conduct clinical and basic research, supported by funding from national research agencies, cardiovascular charities and the European Commission. The group have an excellent track record in supervising MDRes and PhD students to completion and in attracting foreign fellows and students from major European centres.

Bart’s Heart Centre acts as a healthcare provider in ERN GUARD-HEART to support the inherited  cardiac disease thematic areas. The Barts service provides clinical expertise in the management of inherited  heart muscle disorders, arrhythmia syndromes and inherited metabolic and neurological disorders with cardiovascular manifestations. The centre provides advice and access to specialized medical, surgical and  electrophysiological assessment and treatment to the network. The centre supports medical education and  collaborative research between Network partners. Through its links to the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) and the Farr Institute – a UK-wide research collaboration involving 21 academic institutions and health partners in England, Scotland and Wales – the Bart’s Heart Centre provides expertise in population scale data analysis that can be used in service planning across all European nations.
